review 1: I finished this book really fast (which tells something), but somehow I do not have all that much to say about it. I liked some scenes, and the main character is also quite likeable. It is interesting to read from Norman point of view, although I would expect more details about what makes Normans so specific, why they went to England, basically some more general setting for the story. Also, character development could use some improvements - I got to know the main character (somewhat), but the rest of the characters remained quite flat (even though they stayed around for the whole story). Overall, as author's first book it is quite good, and I will read the next instalment.
review 2: The Norman victory over the Saxons was almost short-lived because the north of
... more England fought for several years after William's installation as king. This novel, told from the point of view of a Norman (well, Breton) knight, describes the 1069 uprising led by Edgar the Aetheling. It is the first of a trilogy, and, if it isn't quite as good as Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series, it is still pretty good. The intrigue is a bit better than the combat, though the action is handleed more than effectively. It's central character, Tancred a Dinant, is a complex person. less

In a world without Bernard Cornwell and Jeff Shaara this book would have gotten four stars...

A great read in what I hope will be a good series of books to follow.
