review 1: Some really interesting ideas in here about how cultural change comes about, categories of Christian thinking and their modes of engagement with the world, and recommendations for Christians in a "post-Christian" world. This was required reading for a values course I'm taking, and as an agnostic, I was really at the periphery of what was being discussed. That being said, I was intrigued by Hunter's ideas, and was thrilled that his end suggestion (WAY oversimplified) is to extend kindness to everyone...without trying to convert people. Even more simplified....let people be, and be faithful to your beliefs. I'm quite certain Christians would get something different out of the book than I would, but nevertheless, this was a good read. If I were more interested in Christi... moreanity as a topic, I probably would have ranked it higher.
review 2: I thought his dissection of the three primary American Christian views was illuminating in terms of where they fall short in their attempts to change American society for the better. I think anyone who thinks secularization is "the problem" or inequality is "the problem" or whatever is "the problem" needs to look in the mirror and agree to unify with all Christians on the core tenets of the faith. He describes this as shalom or being fully present as Christians "in exile" in a USA society that is generally against Christianity. I do think it's more Christian than he purports, e.g. major Christian celebrations are still paid holidays for many. It was particularly relevant to read his description of being fully present, following Jesus Christ's example during the week Pope Francis was elected because he is described as someone focused on the things that Jesus focused on when he was on earth. It gives me some hope that we can depoliticize the faith and make a difference toward more shalom in the USA among believers and nonbelievers. less
