First of all, do forgive me if this post is a little vague, I made this dress (well started it) in 2014 so I don’t remember the construction process that well.
As soon as I saw this vintage style, pie-eyed Mickey Mouse fabric in my local Spotlight store, I knew I had to have it so I could make a dress for my next Disney trip. I hunted though the pattern books in store to try and find a dress that would suit the fabric and the vision in my head. I knew that I wanted a contrasting bust panel so I could make it the same red as Mickeys shorts. I ended up choosing Butterick B5882 which was perfectly vintage and had the option to have a contrasting bust.
I remember when I went to cut the pattern pieces from the Mickey fabric, I had to be very careful about where the pieces were placed because the fabrics width was about a 1cm short on either side for the end of the dress panels. This was fine, it just meant I’d have to be careful when sewing the panels together.
The dress part was relatively simple to put together, however the bust part was a nightmare. It involved serious pleating and soon went above my beginner sewers head. As a result, I left the almost fully constructed dress in my fabric pile for a few years and it wasn’t pulled out again until 2017 when we’d be going on our third Disney World trip.
I now felt much more confident in my sewing skills and with the help of my mum, (and reading the instructions) we finally attached the bust panel and finished the dress.
When I first started the dress, I constructed most of it without reading the instructions, and as a result, there is no boning in the bodice like the pattern calls for so it bunches a little bit.
An alteration I also made to the pattern, was the over the shoulder straps, which I decided to not attach at the back and rather just tie around my neck like a halter.
I debuted the dress at Walt Disney World in Florida in 2017 and got to meet the Mouse himself and he loved it. I also received so many compliments from Cast Members and had numerous other guests asked where I had brought it.
Mum and I Disneybounding as Mickey Mouse with the mouse himself. Heading to the People Mover. Meeting Piglet at our Crystal Palace dinner. Riding the Merry-Go-Round in Fantasyland. Enjoying a turkey leg in Frontierland. Obligatory in front of Cinderella Castle photo.Styled with ~
