review 1: Pete the Cat needs no introduction. Beloved by kids, parents, and teachers everywhere, this groovy cat is back and this time there’s a new guy in town. Pete is jammin with his band when a moving van shows up along with a mysterious little dude with green shoes and a red hat. “Sounds like my kind of cat!” Pete says. Pete would really like to make a new friend, but he’s feeling a little shy. So he skateboards back and forth in front of the new guy’s house until he gets a chance to meet him. Gus the platypus is like no one Pete has ever seen before, but Pete says “You’re not like me, and I’m not like you, but I think being different is really very cool.” On the pages that follow, readers will meet more of Pete’s friends as Pete tries to find a way to help ... moreGus fit in. But no one, not squirrel or grumpy toad or even octopus, can figure out something that Gus can do with them for fun. Until Pete accidentally discovers Gus’s secret talent, and finds the perfect way for him to fit in with all of his friends. The message here is a simple one - being different is okay and not everyone has the same abilities, but everyone has something they can do - but Pete the Cat has a way of delivering simple messages in a very fun, very cool way. This title is no exception, and Pete lovers everywhere will want to include this latest offering from the Deans on their bookshelves. There is no song to accompany this one, but there is a free video available on the publisher’s website and the link is included on the book itself.
review 2: While I know the Pete the Cat books have little lessons within about positive attitudes and such, this one was just a tad more didactic in getting along, accepting differences (and limitations), and finding things in common with others. Still worked, but it's not my favorite Pete the Cat. This would have been great in my recent music-theme. But could still work in a Friends theme, or animal theme, or even a platypus theme. (I know another 1 or 2 with a platypus character.) less

Love the illustrations, but the storyline just doesn't measure up to the original Pete books.

Not quite as groovy as other Pete books, but a good message just in time for back to school.
