Rain rain go away, come again another day!
That is always Ruby’s reaction when she wakes up and sees it’s raining outside. She hates to be stuck indoors all day and she makes sure it is no fun for anyone else either. She is currently going through the joy that is the terrible twos (soon to be promoted to three-nager!). Everything has to go as according to the wishes of my little miss dictator or total meltdown will ensue. Something as small as the ‘wrong colour’ spoon can send the whole house into chaos. So during the dark winter months a rainy day was a total nightmare, but now the weather is a bit warmer it can be fun to play in the rain, it is only water after all!
So after I put down our littlest monster for a nap, Ruby and I (not forgetting Holly the dog!) went out to explore in the rain. It was absolutely chucking it down so I didn’t expect to be out very long but Ruby had other ideas. First on the agenda was to throw buckets of water down the slide to make a waterfall. I’d planned for Ruby to try sailing her boats down it but she decided it would be more fun to slide down herself!
After making sure she was thoroughly wet through, Ruby was delighted to spot some snails enjoying the wet weather. This led to a mini beast adventure looking for other creepy crawlies. Ruby decided that the snails and worms would enjoy a ride in her hands… I didn’t join in with this one haha!
After going back inside to wash our hands and have lunch (Ruby had to be carried in kicking and screaming haha) we ventured back out in the rain to explore the village and do some serious puddle jumping. There is a little river that runs through the village that quite often floods during heavy rain so we went to investigate. Sure enough the road was covered in a ‘gianormous’ puddle and the river looked fit to burst. Ruby (and Holly) were fascinated and stood watching the flowing water for ages. All the way home Ruby talked excitedly about the flood and she was most concerned that it would come to her house. I had to reassure her that the flood of Noah’s Ark proportions that she was imagining was not going to happen, and we were lucky that this flood would be no more than a ‘gianormous’ puddle.
Ruby enjoyed our rainy day adventure so much and it made me realise that even on the wettest of days you can still have lots of fun outdoors. All you need is a raincoat and some welly boots and your good to go. Clothes will dry and cold little toes will warm up again with a snuggly blanket and a warm drink when you get home.
