review 1: I'm not ready to review this book yet, mainly because I haven't made enough to be truly forthcoming about the recipes. But after reading some of the reviews...one in particular, I felt compelled to speak up for America's middle class intermediate cooks. So, Jamie if you are reading this, this is for you. I can't imagine an intermediate cook NOT knowing what zest is...lemon, orange, grapefruit or lime. I can't imagine not owning a grater here in the USA. As an intermediate cook, I can vouch for the fact that we own microplanes and zesters. I am a big fan of Jamie Oliver and I have to say that most of his cooking that I have seen on his shows and read in his cookbooks has been clean, simple and relatively gadget free...one of the things I like about Jamie's coo... moreking.
review 2: I like this book a lot and have used it frequently over the last few years. He manages to succeed in keeping things simple yet varied with a limited selection of ingredients. Not quite as pernickety as some of his earlier books. Plus, I like the cooking ethos he's trying to promote in this book. Good for family meals, ideas and for those with limited cooking experience (there's some fairly basic stuff in there I skip over). The sizzling beef with spring onions and black bean sauce is divine and I could eat masses of it. Plus, it's the first egg fried rice recipe that seems to work for me.I've done most of these by now. Some favourites?- salmon tikka- mac/cauliflower cheese (my slightly altered version but a good start)- cauliflower cheese soup (gorgeous)- most of the other soups are pretty good too- baked creamy leaks- the mince section is good for inspiration and I think the meatballs work best though I've made the bolognese plenty of times- the basic stew recipe isn't bad to experiment with - spanish style griddled steak works a treat- moroccan lamb- pan fried curried cod- salmon fishcakesMmmmmm. Pretty good book. He looks kind of weird and plasticy on the front cover though. less
