review 1: What can I say! The best debut novel I have read, how on earth are you going to follow this Jane Lark?Lord Edward Marlow is just fabulous, up against the highest odds he determines to help Ellen Harding escape from years of beatings, fear, and worse, her own self loathing. He vows to help her without any thought of the opinions of others. He braves the wrath of the highest, including his own family, in order to restore Ellen to the position he feels she is entitled to. Ellen's self esteem is at an all time low and she is paralysed by fear and unable to fight against the powerful men who have placed her in her own particular hell, unable to make choices. Fortunately for her she makes the acquaintance of Edward Marlow in a seedy gaming hell, their meeting is almost entirel... morey controlled through eye contact, the attraction and empathy Edward feels for Ellen is immediate. I love the way Jane Lark uses eye contact to convey the attraction between these two would be lovers. It's original, beautifully, spine tinglingly romantic, I was hooked from page one.The novel unfolds in the most exciting, delicious way, trapping the reader in its pages, I was left, wondering how Edward could possibly succeed with this seemingly impossible task but somehow he does and in a plausible almost swashbuckling manner. Ms.Lark captures the atmosphere in a succinct and mesmerising way: 'Their horses' hooves struck the cobbles with a sharp metallic ring. The sound bounced back in a harsh echo off the terraces of brick buildings which flanked the streets, like a minute bell chiming out the time as they rode out of London at a canter.'Atmospheric, romantic, intriguing, beautiful....a winner, an honourable hero and brave heroine. An uplifting read, definitely a winner. 5 full glittering stars.
review 2: I would like to thank author Jane Lark for sending me a copy of this in exchange for a fair and honest review. We catch up with Ellen or first meet her depending on how you have read these books, she is now back in London and the mistress of Lord Gainsborough.Ellen though has changed from the lovely young girl in The Lost Love of Soldier and is just surviving the best way that she knows how until she meets Edward. They are instantly attracted to one and other. Could it be possible for Ellen to find love again after losing Paul in the war?Little does Edward know how much under Lord Gainsborough’s control Ellen is under, they start a dangerous liaison that will endanger them both and others.I love how this story weaves in and out, with other people becoming involved. Ellen underneath is still the lovely girl of prequel and Edward is handsome gentleman and Ellen’s knight in shinning armour. This is a throughly beautiful love story and all through I was hoping things would work our for Ellen and Edward. This is again a thoroughly enjoyable romp through 19th Centuary England with 2 great characters and their family and friends. less
