review 1: I think Jane Yolen must be on a mission to write something from every single genre out there! What a talented writer! She is amazing.Graphic novels are not really my thing, although I do try to dip my toe in every once in a while. This one really did catch my interest. Seems like some people didn't like it when the fantasy elements came in, but that is when I really started enjoying it. I found the fencing elements quite interesting as well. I will definitely read a sequel to this should I come across it on the shelves at my library. 3.5 stars.
review 2: This was a bit slow paced, as it took more than half of the book to get to the fantasy which is really the point of the story. And I think we've seen this done before, and better than it's done here. Still,... more the artwork is pretty good, though highly reminiscent of Disney studio work - but then there's nothing wrong with that. All in all, I think Jane Yolen can do better than this - hopefully she does, in the sequel that this volume was clearly setting up. less
