review 1: Normally I love Janet Chapman's books, but I'm not really liking the Spellbound Falls books for some reason. This book was particularly annoying because I listened to it on Audible. How many times can an author use the word growled to describe a way in which a person speaks. After awhile I found myself flinching every time I heard it. I know it's petty but when it's used so many times one does tend to focus on how something is being written instead of what is being read. The story was OK but not as enjoyable as her other series.
review 2: When gruff loner Duncan MacKeage is mistakenly attacked by a small horde of wild children and meets their overprotective widowed mother sparks fly—and some of those sparks are downright angry. The old adage that strong feelin
... moregs often equal strong passions applies to this romantic comedy melding with the paranormal, magical realm. As a second novel to Spellbound Falls, it can be read alone. I read this novel first with no confusion and absolutely fell in love with the precocious (and yet at times completely, exasperatingly, realistic) children, as well as with the reluctant growing romance between Duncan and Peg.Peg is a down on her luck widow struggling to raise her children and harboring a secret curse. Convinced that every female in her family is destined to kill any man she loves, she is determined to never let anyone into her heart again.Duncan is a member of a legendary family of magic and time travel. However, unable to connect to the magic, he has distanced himself from them and his legacy. When their worlds collide, nothing, not even their own reluctant natures can keep their fates from colliding again and again. And each time is fresh and full of passion (in one form or the other). For a man born to a magical world, Duncan is surprisingly on the level. The secondary characters were bright and provided extra flair to the main romance and helped bring the story to full magical color. The humor made me laugh more than once. There were times when Peg acted too headstrong, and Duncan attempted to take control of things from a distance, but what made this romance so great a read was that time was spent developing the way they not only fell in love with each other, but BETTERED each other as well. They didn’t need each other simply because of lust, this novel showed the ways their personalities meshed, melded, and enhanced each other. The dialogue is witty and fun. For a novel involving some hardcore magic, I believed in it. Janet Chapman succeeded wildly in creating a story wrapped in charming romance, surprising twists, exciting turns, and bursting with life. I fell in love with the story, the life, the town, and the characters. I wholeheartedly recommend this read! less
