review 1: First, I will say that one of the main reasons this book only gets 2 stars from me is because of my personal convictions, but that is only part of the reason it only gets 2 stars. Read on for those reasons. The description drew me in and the title intrigued me. How could a crush be illegal? I was curious and decided to try it out. After all, I was able to get it for free, how bad could that be? I was bored on a long car trip, so I started skimming through the available short stories on my Kindle. This is the one I chose, hoping it would entertain me for the next hour or so.I did read it and I even finished it. However, I did not enjoy reading it. The romance was blah. The humor was pretty good, especially the cows. That was definitely the best part of the book. The rest was... more just barely above boring. If you're looking for an easy read, feel free to read this book. If you're looking for a happily ever after ending, don't read this book. It doesn't end with everybody dying, but I was a little disappointed in the ending. It also seemed like the author was rushed meeting a deadline and decided "it's time to end the book with a bang". Boom! It's done. Maybe I'm just weird and like to read books that could possibly be realistic (unless they are sci-fi or fantasy). There seem to be quite a few books where the books just end with either no real resolution or they resolve way too quickly without accounting for the YEARS of hurt the people went through before suddenly realizing that this person was okay now. This book isn't quite that extreme, but if I were Elsie, I think it would take me longer to truly trust Kye again.
review 2: Okay, so this is a story where a student has a crush on her teacher, but it isn't creepy. I promise. :) It's actually the kind of cute story you expect from Janette Rallison. The inspiration from her story actually came from her husband's grandparents. When the grandparents met, the grandma was a senior in high school and the grandpa was a teacher at the school. Rallison writes a little bit more about their romance in a note at the end of the book, so you can read about their cute real love story."Strictly speaking, her mother's applesauce was more like pie filling. That's why everyone loved it.""Elsie took a sip of her soup. It was thick and spicy, warm with cheese and comfort—which were sometimes indistinguishable from one another.""'As long as you don't remember, I can say anything, can't I? I saved you from a burning building, and it's quite ungracious of you to forget about it.'Kye's lips quirked in a familiar way. 'No, I'm sure I would remember that.''Think harder . . . the smoke, the heat, the flames licking around you.'He took a casual sip of his water. 'I believe what you're actually describing is Hell. I've been there several times but don't recall ever seeing you there.''Oh, I've been there many times,' Elsie said. 'It's always a lovely reprieve from the Montana winters.'""She felt transparent then, as though he could tell she had dressed up for him. She turned away from him with an inward sigh. She couldn't win. Yesterday she'd felt dowdy and pathetic. Now she felt dressed up and pathetic." less
