review 1: In this volume, we find our main trio being punished. As punishment, they must serve time as part of the school's mathletes team. At first, they hate this, but when the team keeps winning, and even makes it to the finals, they love it. Just as always happens, if you are successful at something, it usually grows on you. So, when they hear their coach/teacher saying there's no way they could win in the finals against Willowby, they know--then and there--that they must win at any cost, but they are worried why Willowby never loses. So are Lunch Lady and Betty. Lunch Lady is on the case, and a visit to Willowby School just goes to show her that the school's mathletes are not normal children. They find out, when they win the tournament, that Willowby's mathletes are actually... more aliens. But, with Lunch Lady and Betty on the main trio's side, Willowby's aliens are easily taken down.------------------------- This series is seriously addictive. If like "Babymouse" and/or "Squish", I highly recommend you read this series. If you like this series, read those two series as well.
review 2: This is one of 7 graphic novels in the "Lunch Lady" series. In this particular book, 3 students are forced to join the Mathletes as punishment for skipping out on a previous school function. They are incredibly unhappy about the ordeal at first, but progressively learn to enjoy their participation. Things are going well...and they're winning! But something seems 'off' about the other team that made it to the finals. This is where the lunch lady steps in and saves the day. She uses her master detective skills to figure out just why it is that Willowby Academy has won EVERY year. The title says it all..."Mutant Mathletes".I think this book would be best for grades 2nd through 4th. It's an extremely easy and quick read, and has a fast paced story line. I'm not a huge fan of graphic novels, but I can see why others would enjoy them. This book really puts the reader in the middle of the action and almost feels similar to watching a movie. I would use it as a way to attract those students previously not interested in reading.Krosoczka, J. J. (2012). Lunch Lady and the Mutant Mathletes. New York, NY: Alfred A. Knopf less
