review 1: I liked Garth Ennis' take on the Punisher, the only Punisher stories I ever really enjoyed, as I felt Ennis really understood the character like no other writer before him had. Frank Castle is not really an anti-hero, and he's sure as hell no hero. He's an insane homicidal maniac. Sure, there's a method to his madness, but that doesn't make it less mad. Now along comes Jason Aaron in PunisherMax, first with the Kingpin storyline, then Bullseye. Jason Aaron gets the Punisher. He ain't a good guy, and let's not pretend he is. This volume is pumped up by the presence of the assassin-for-hire Bullseye, who's even more batshit crazy than Castle. There's a really interesting take on why and how Castle became the Punisher that I hadn't seen explored before. (Does it take one madm... morean to understand another?) Throw in Steve Dillon's great, ultra-realistic art to the mix, and you can't lose. Not for the faint of heart, but great stuff.
review 2: There have been dozens of attempts to tweak the Punisher origin over the years. This one came at it from an entirely different perspective. This time someone as insane as Bullseye wants to get into Castle's head in real time with substitute re-enactments...and he succeeds. He figures out the one spoken sentence that cracks the adamantium shell that is Frank Castle's persona. He finds out the one thing Castle couldn't admit to himself or forgive himself for, and consequently, couldn't get enough resulting revenge for. This rocked! I am so glad Dillon did the art. This was the last great Punisher storyline. The official death of classic Punisher went out like a wet fart compared to this. This was an inner death that you could feel happening as you read it. NOTE: When Bullseye says the magic sentence to Castle, he whispers it right into his ear. It's printed with an EXTREMELY small font, so small that at first glance it appears to be an inaudible sentence, as if it were done for effect (like the movie Lost in Translation, or something). I know for a fact that plenty of fans (and my spouse) interpreted it this way, BUT THERE ARE REAL WORDS THERE! GET THE MAGNIFYING GLASS OUT BECAUSE THOSE WORDS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD TO YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE STORY!!! I do not use the word 'genius' very lightly when it comes to comics, but this was and it blew me away. less

Continuing Jason Aaron's Punisher Max run. Best Punisher since Garth Ennis wrote the book,

Engaging story, but the artwork didn't really carry the mood.
