review 1: Full of gratuitous violence, some really amusing black humor deaths and The Punisher! I should love this comic. I did not. The story is set up well, with great promise for the plot but the development is not the best. This is essentially an origin story for the Kingpin and nothing more. The punisher is almost like a guest star in his own comic. We expect a really badass, violence overdose when The Punisher and Kingpin come face to face but the problem is... that moment never comes. There´s a small confrontation, just one or two pages long and then The Punisher is occupied with another foe, that suddenly just appears out of nowhere and Kingpin goes about his business of becoming... well the Kingpin we all know. The ending is well made, but again The Punisher is put to the ... moreside and things just never seem to really “climax” the way the comic might have hinted at first. A lot of potential felt wasted, for a conclusion that seemed a bit too desperate to be shocking and a page to set up Bullseye to battle “The Punisher” in the next volume. The art also doesn't help, never rising above ordinary. Wasted potential.
review 2: From Spiderman to Daredevil, Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin has tangled with some of the best superheroes Marvel has to offer - but how did he become the Kingpin and how will he fare against Marvel's most notorious "hero", Frank Castle aka The Punisher? This book has Castle gunning for mobsters yet again but this time he meets a formidable match against the Kingpin. It's the first book I've read of Jason Aaron's but his work is solid and he's written a great addition to the Punisher series. Steve Dillon is a veteran of this character and the comics world and his work is, as always, instantly recognisable and excellent. The story is full of gory violence and fast paced action and Aaron captures the characters of Castle and Fisk nicely. The book is a bit short but serves as a prelude to more substantial work to come, especially given the introduction of a familiar villain on the last page. As a crossover of two established Marvel Universe characters, this is a good book and a lot of fun to read. If you're a fan of the Punisher, you'll enjoy him tangling with Kingpin. less
