review 1: This is the volume where things start heating up and we begin to understand that Dash Bad Horse is more than just a surly thug-- he's an anti-hero driven by self-doubt and some deep, dark regrets. We also learn that "villain" Lincoln Red Crow is just as conflicted and complicated, and it becomes clear that this isn't a story about good guys and bad guys. It's a story about loss, anger, regret, and the lengths some men will go to to regain things they have lost.While Dash is investigating the murder of a prostitute (and reluctantly identifying with the victim's son) he learns that his mother Gina has been murdered. Suppressing his rage and grief, he carries on, even as a devastated Red Crow becomes obsessed with finding her killer. Dead Mothers wraps up with a touching chap... moreter devoted to Officer Falls Down and struggle for redemption and grace. It's a strangely positive, life-affirming moment in a story that is otherwise very bleak. Scalped continues to be a terrific series.
review 2: It's hard to put into words how I feel after reading this book trade after trade. I want to wash my hands and tell everyone (adults anyway) to read this. Its so real and raw that it doesn't even seem possible. The art, even with three different artists, fits so well to the theme of the book. Dash Bad Horse is such an intriguing character that he could be a movie heavyweight. Jason Aaron is scary good! less
