review 1: Quite a bit different from the usual end of the world story, and more than a little scary. The notion that a sociopath with a bottomless pit of money can wreck havoc on the rest of the world is dismaying, partly because it could certainly happen, though maybe not to the extent depicted in this book. There's as much horror as science fiction contained here. While I enjoyed the story, I had a couple of issues. Some of Steven's perverted behavior I could have done without, as the book could have done without it. Excluding it wouldn't have affected the story one way or the other. I also felt the AI got a bit out into left field, particularly near the end of the book. The AI's capabilities would have been more believable had the book been set farther into the future of developin... moreg technology.I had no difficulty reading this. The absence of quotation marks in dialogue is a style choice, not erroneous grammar. This book is certainly not the first time an author has chosen to use that style. After the first few pages, I had no trouble understanding who was speaking at any given point. Overall, I found this to be an entertaining read.
review 2: It annoys me that a book which sounds like a good read is rendered unreadable because the author (sadly like many before) thinks that by doing something different it will give the book a gimmick.Speech marks are an essential part of grammar. They are there to indicate when someone is speaking (clue is in the name). Excluding them is not artistic in any way, it is simply incorrect grammatically.Similarly, stories are about events that have happened, otherwise the story couldn't be told. That's why they are written in the past tense. Writing in the present tense just gets in the way of the story.Apologies for ranting, but I really wanted to read this book and was frustrated to begin and discover that the author had ruined it. I realise that this is just my opinion so I'll get down from my high horse now and calm myself down with a bit of Dickens... less
