review 1: In his first novel, The Returned, Jason Mott asked the question: "What would happen if the dead began coming back to life?" It was a compelling story with an unpredictable resolution. In The Wonder of All Things, he asks: "What would happen if a child were found to be someone who could heal the sick?" And, while well written, it is not as compelling a story. Rather, the development of the plot is pretty easy to predict, and the ending is as well.
review 2: When twelve-year old Ava, heals her best friend, Wash, from a fatal wound received during a tragic air show collision, the miracle is captured on video, leading to hysteria and fear in her small town. Still dealing with her mother's suicide when she was a child, Ava is facing her stepmother's pregnancy a... morend her father's inability to cope with the hard feelings that exist in their home. When religious and medical groups descend on her town in the hopes of receiving Ava's healing powers, her safety is threatened multiple times. Wash and Ava focus on their longstanding friendship to support each other, both pretending not to notice that each time Ava heals someone, her own existence is threatened. Original and believable, I thought this book was sheer magic. less
