review 1: I loved the premise of this novel, same as Mott's other novel, The Returned, and same as that book, the whole story fell flat. I love how the author spins the idea of human's control of, and obsession with, life and death. The lack of excitement in the story and connection between characters really bummed me. I wanted to like it but I wanted more oomph. I eagerly await another novel from; I love the ideas, I want to love it all! Also, I don't understand Macon's character at all- what sort of father let's a random preacher dictate what his daughter does with her ability and her life, especially the town sheriff! I wanted to understand the minor characters, who played somewhat bigger roles in the overall story, more; such as Sam, Isaiah, Deborah, and Wash's dad; he just ditch... moreed town, again!!!, when his kid gets diagnosed with cancer?!?!!! Ughh.
review 2: Really loved this one. Jason Mott is a fantastic new voice in fiction--his first novel, The Returned, is on it's way to my house as we speak; I ordered it as soon as I finished this title. This book takes a voyeuristic approach on life and the world as we, as humans, see it and attempt to understand it. Through young Ava, the child narrator, Mott touches on everything that is real in this circle of life; the raw feeling of love, the strength drawn only from life experiences, the innocence and freedom of childhood, the reality of death... In short, this novel is about the multi-dimensional beauty that is life. This story will linger within you long after you turn the last page. less

Exciting book of love and sacrifice. Questions personal freedom and societal responsibility.

This was a quick read. Didn't like the father in the story at all and liked the step mom.
