review 1: This was one of those books that I wasn't sure I was going to like. I like books set in Africa, but wasn't sure about the whole boys boarding school theme. I thought maybe it would be too juvenile for my taste. This book grabs you, pulls you in and leaves you stunned! The one part I found hard to believe was the character, Ivan's, influence over the school's headmaster. I'm not sure what kinds of things go on at a school such as this, but some of them were horrible and yet those in authority never seemed to know about them. I sure felt sorry for some of the boys!
review 2: One of the things I love about historical fiction is that you can learn about a period in history or a foreign place without having to "Study". That being said, this was a very shameful,... more brutal time in history. I wasn't tempted to quit the book, but to at least skip some of the second half when the boys' brutality was constant and sickening. I would recommend for mature readers who would be able to grasp the lessons learned from all the suffering. less
