review 1: I was shocked by how much I liked this book. Jason Zimmerman constructs a powerful and intelligent argument on why the horror films of the 70's are worthy of attention and critical thought. To learn how people like Wes Craven, John Carpenter, George Romero and others went about making their low budget indie projects is to better understand the film industry in general, as well as capitalism in post-Vietnam era America. It's also filled with facts and stories I never knew before, which is impressive since I own two-to-four different DVD versions of most of the movies covered, and with just as many documentaries and commentary tracks. Zimmerman did some serious research, and spares us redundant information and obvious observations. A one of a kind book that even non-horror f... moreans will get a lot from. It should be mandatory reading for film students.
review 2: This book is a MUST for any horror fan that has seen more of the genre than just their own generation's version of it. I loved all the behind the scenes tidbits, small bios on the directors/writers and how they got started. It focuses mostly on how horror changed from the 50's to the 60's and 70's. It touches on the 80's and beyond, but only slightly. Basically, enough to make the points needed. I assume those time periods are for another book. The narration was good. This book has made me want to re-watch a lot of horror now to catch the things they talked about. It will be like watching them with a new purpose. Good stuff. less
