review 1: Another work commute listen that I enjoyed. Started off a bit slow but once I got into it, the pace and tension picked up and I actually wasn't too upset when I got stuck in traffic and so was able to finish the book before making it to work. There are lots of interesting characters and Elizabeth Jasicki does a great job of bringing their voices to life. the lead character, Jennifer Strange, is particularly well done. Mature for her age, almost 16 don't you know, quirky but with a strong moral sense. Lots of satire of contemporary society through the lens of this unique fantasy world; politics, multinational corporations, office work, etc. Some of the slowness comes from this being the first in a trilogy. Fforde is clearly setting up the series in this first book. And... more it worked, as I am looking forwarding to reading (or listening to) the rest.
review 2: I actually liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. I usually don't read these kinds of books but i thought that this one was really interesting. I really liked that the main character was a girl and how strong and independent she was. I thought that the whole idea of it was really interesting, how it was set in modern days but with magic incorporated into it. This story is about a girl named Jennifer Strange who works in a place that uses magic to do jobs for people, but magic is becoming extinct because people just don't use it as much as they used to. In the book she learns that she is the last dragon slayer and she goes on this crazy journey to fulfill her destiny. I thought that this was a fun read and definitely a book I would recommend to young adults who like fantasy. less

Such a hard book to put down. Stayed up late just to see how he'd finish it.

Not nearly as good as some of his other books.
