review 1: A few weeks back, some smarty-pants declared that adults should be ashamed of reading "Young Adult" books. That person, who must be well known in some circles but not in any where I'd care to spend time, is a ninny. Jasper Fforde writes YA books, as well as books aimed at adults, that this grandfather loves. Endlessly inventive, preposterous but gripping plots, side-splitting fun. I say, Fiddlesticks! Go boldly into that YA section of your local bookseller's or library and have some fun, dammit!And you kids may enjoy yourselves, too.
review 2: Kinda wavering between 3 and 4 stars on this. It's a good adventure, people die on a quest, the off-beat quirky humor is there. There's some romance, some violence, and disasters galore.Maybe I'm just too familiar with th... moree characters and the author, or maybe I should have waited another month before reading this one, but it didn't grab me like the first two did. Maybe waiting for the next book will make it seem a little better. I just may have burned out a bit on this. less
