review 1: Hell's Pawn is not my usual type of book. I had read the summary a few times, trying to decide whether or not to read it. Then I saw in an interview where Jay Bell had said that he wished more people would give this book a chance. I adore Jay, so I decided to try it. I should have known better than to think that anything written by Bell could be anything other than amazing. What a great afterlife Bell created in this book! It was very well done, great characters (of course, it's Jay Bell), lots of action, and a fun read. And there was a surprise for me in one of the last chapters, too.
review 2: This was a delightful take on spirituality and the possibilities and realms that came before. I have a love of ancient cultures from the time I was a child. Hell's Pawn
... more had me going right from the start. Death and afterlife are the themes in this book. I loved how Jay (I use his first name like I know him (which I don't) but I think he'd be okay with it rather than the more formal Mr. Bell) played with them all and came up with an interesting way to have them play together. All of the characters are memorable though my particular favorite is Rimmon. I was touched that the incubus had a heart of gold that he kept tucked away. That was a nice touch and the way it is revealed didn't feel forced or contrived. It was a good story with good pacing and some interesting concepts to contemplate for those who are sorting out what their spirituality is. A fun read that kept my interest all the way through (though to be honest the parts where John lingered in Purgatory did seem to droll on a bit but then I realized that that was entirely the point... you got what John was going through and how he must have felt about it). An incubus and an Arch Angel in love? That got the mind rolling with that concept alone. Thanks for this one Mr. B. Loved it while it lasted. less

I really enjoyed this adventure. I didn't feel like this was a romance novel.

Something different and more than a romance.
