review 1: I didn't want to like this novel. I really thought it was going to be in the same fashion as the novels of another author who I won't mention, but he also addresses the same topic in several of his novels. Gay romance novels tend to be way too easy, too simple, nothing far from the fantasies all of us have, a love utopia that doesn't quite exist. My experience with coming-of-age novels that deal with this theme has been better. I thought this book would fall in the first category, and it certainly gets near it in the first part of the novel. Even though I was enjoying it, and damn it I fell in love with the characters, I was still wearing a shield while devouring this book. Then the second part arrived, and I began to predict everything, because it was exactly the type of ... morebook that deep down I wanted to write, the one I wanted to read but I couldn't quite find; I'd always try to stay away from that and create something that feels "more interesting" or "more complex."Suddenly, this book surprised me in the last few pages. I found myself wailing. A part of me still wants to consider the ending of this book a manipulation, a deus ex machina of sorts that while bringing sadness, it also solves some of the problems. Still, I chose not to care, and I accepted the story as it was without thinking of the real world, or how it fares in comparison to other novels; it spoke to me in many ways, and I mirrored myself in the main character, so my review is probably biased. I can afford to do this every now, and then. This is one of the cases.By the way, I chose not to talk a lot about the story, it's better if you just go into it without knowing much about it.
review 2: Oh my God, Jay, I've cried so much and I have an appointment in half an hour !!! How could you do that to me ?!Well well, my dear, this is THE story. Usually, I don't like so much when three people are involved, even it's not in the same time. This book reminds me of Second Changes by TA Webb, one of my favourite book ever. Except this one began when Tim and Ben are still in their teens. I loved all the characters, especially Jace, with his calm, his ponderance, his constant love... Life can be so unfair sometimes...So this is the story of Ben. There are several parts in this book with gap of many years between them. People met, and splited and found themselves again. It is about love, about friendship, truth and confidence. And what can someone do for the beloved one. It's a rollercoaster for raw emotions. I really have to stop crying now, or someone's gonna begin to ask questions about my sanity !!! I can't wait to read the next book.Actually, this reading comes right after a really sad book that I didn't understand at all (and not because I'm French but because the subject was totally beyond me...) I didn't get into this book and I really needed to find an enjoyable story with the HEA I carved. I found it ! Thank you, Jay for making my day better (and this time, if I cried, it was from joy...).I'm currently buyng the scond of the serie... Talk to you for my next review :) less
