review 1: The premise and plot of this book hold so much potential to make it epic. A book one could easily lose themselves in like Les Miserables. The reason it wasn't a gripping tale was the characters. Victor Hugo was able to craft characters you could see multiple sides to. For example Javert was a "bad guy", but everything he did, every action and decision he made was because he truly felt he was doing the right thing. That he was doing his job.The main characters were pair together after one happen-stance meeting. One meeting in which two separate adolescent couples fall madly in love isn't believable. I would have totally bought into it had the foundation for my belief been made firmer by the author further developing the character and giving the beginning of the book a bette... morer set up.I loved the setting of the book. It was very well done and I could easily envision the places involved. As I said before, the plot hold a great amount of promise, but because of undeveloped characters and lack of explanation into the Phalangist's organization (bad guys) it flat lined for me.Not the worst read, but far for the best.
review 2: This book was extremely hard to read, and I can tell I'm going to have a tough time reviewing it as well. At first I was a bit confused as to why there wasn't many reviews, but then I realized this book has another name, 'Winter's End', which explains it. First of all, this book is translated from French. It makes the writing stilted, broken and confusing. Most of what is probably exciting in French is lost. The characters speak without emotion, the scenes lack suspense. I tried, but I couldn't connect at all.It seems like a great idea; four teens pursued over mountains by dog men, escaping a mysterious boarding school that is more like a prison. It should be awesome. It's not. I just never cared enough about any of the characters enough to want to keep turning pages. Not for me. Maybe others will enjoy it more. less
