review 1: In terms of historical fiction, Jean Auel is unequalled. The uniqueness of this story line, combined with the absolutely breathtaking research, which is woven so convincingly into a novel format, has provided me with an approach to emulate in my writing. And indeed I find that my style in many ways incorporates some of the techniques I have learned by reading all of these books in the series. I only wish this had been my idea, but then the time Ms Auel spent in becoming knowledgeable about prehistory in the European setting is something very few writers could or would undertake. I have learned so much from these books, and because I was so fascinated by the history and the location, my husband and I took a trip to the Dordogne region in France to see the painted caves and ... morethe dwellings of the cro-magnon and the neanderthal people who lived there eons ago. It was indescribable.
review 2: Revisited this series when the sixth book came out. Loved the first four but felt the last two and sixth in particular limped along a bit. Reading the series as a more mature reader I found the style of the sex scenes very dated and excruciatingly repetitive. On the whole the authentic feeling bought about the authors obviously meticulous research coupled with two very believable and likeable characters makes this series a winner. less
