review 1: The quotes from Matisse himself describing his "second life" cutting paper shapes after illness has restricted his ability to paint are a highlight of the text. The spreads where he is drawing on his ceiling with chalk and cutting his largest shapes are well-done and these illustrations give a reasonable impression of his work. The sentimentality in the last two spreads seems at odds with the previous pages.
