review 1: This will not be a book for everyone. Loosely based on the Pendle Witch Trials in Lancaster in 1612 Winterson carefully orchestrates a tale of horror as to the treatment of women and people at a time when King and God were confusing figures of power with the authority to do almost anything to others. Winterson carefully orchestrates this tiny book with interesting characters and a sense of mystique constantly suggesting that perhaps the women did really have a sort of power but leaving that decision to the reader’s interpretation. I found the book both frustrating and intriguing, the characters were interesting and confronting though at times the story was disjointed and difficult to believe. The book is only 224 pages long and in the few nights it takes to read ther... moree are moments of both brilliance and then almost boredom, and when it ends I was haunted for wanting more. I am interested to read her other material.
review 2: I'm so used to thinking Jeanette Winterson & 5 Stars but this didn't have that Winterson evocative turn of phrase or imagery. unfortunately. the story itself was fine, great even. I do love me some witches and that kind of stuff. Very quick to read as well, I felt sated when I had finished it but it was missing that breathlessness, that drowning, that perfect sentence, the first glance into the eyes of your future partner when your heart flips and you feel like you're going to puke and not in a romantic way but in a life changing way. But it's missing something. It's missing Winterson. less
