review 1: I enjoyed following Spade and Denise side story; it was wonderful and engaging. Different from Cat and Bones view of their undead universe. Glad to have learn about their back story; especially the both character's transformation. It's a great read; learned to kind of love Ian character. The supernatuaral world is expected in this novel. From undead vampires, human interaction, demon, and shape-shifting. There's some gore fights, some love, and the conflicting prejudice of the supernatural/paranormal world versus the normal world. By all means are not that much different; just the other has the "super."
review 2: I’ve been enjoying the wild ride that is Cat and Bones in the Night Huntress books and that includes all of the awesome side characters so I was exc
... moreited to see that a few of them got their own stories in this little spinoff series! I’ve taken a liking to Spade ever since Cat first tackled him in Bones’ cave way back in book 1 and he’s continued to impress in the other books as he has proven over and over again what a loyal friend and ally he is to Bones. I was glad to see that his loyalty and protectiveness were in full force in this book! I was also pleased to find out the heroine was Denise, she was another great secondary character from the other books and I was heartbroken for her when Randy died so I was all for her getting a HEA.The romance in this book was a slow burn mainly because Denise didn’t really want anything to do with vampires or their world because of how Randy died and Spade doesn’t date humans as a rule due to a tragic loss in his past. It’s ironic that the big thing they have in common is what drives the biggest wedge between them. But when Denise is branded by a demon and in order to save herself and her family is forced to find her ancestor who ran out on the demon many years before she is left with no choice but to turn to a vampire for help. She doesn’t want to burden Cat and Bones with her dilemma so she runs down her very short list of other contenders and settles on Spade. He isn’t sure what to make of her request at first but soon realizes the danger she is in and vows to help her see it through. They start out as hesitant friends and end up having to pretend they are in a relationship in order to keep the other vampires from being suspicious. Of course from here their attraction for one another grows and it’s actually quite a touching relationship that develops. There were a few scenes that actually made me a little misty eyed. It was also pretty steamy, there’s a certain shower scene that sticks in my mind…There are quite a lot of obstacles for them to overcome, including having to accept what the other one is, not to mention dangerous vampires and powerful demons. True to form this book is action packed and had a few twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved when the rest of the crew showed up to help. It’s always a fun time when you get Cat, Bones, Ian, Mencheres and Spade together! Speaking of Ian, there were some truly priceless scenes with him in this book! He’s always been the arrogant jerk but it’s taken to another level in this book and I loved it. His “payback” to Denise and Spade was hilarious! The ending was exciting and Denise totally kicked butt! I also ended up liking Nathanial in the end. The epilogue was also bittersweet (if you’re reading the Kindle edition be sure not to miss it, the epilogue actually appears after the excerpt of Bound by Flames). All in all this was a nice addition to the Night Huntress world and I look forward to Mencheres’ story next! less
