review 1: "Taste of Fire" is a story about a young woman's search for identity. Within that search mysteries exist that need to be resolved before TerriO'Neal can reach the pinnacle of resolution.Jeannie Faulkner Barber's well-crafted novel is set in a small Alabama town in which TerriO'Neal seeks identity after s fiery childhood car crash that has left her scarred and a mysterious fire in a building that has claimed the life of her father. The fire and her resulting scar are explained by Terri's father with the words, "The flames licked your arm, but when it tasted you it knew you were special, and the fire was afraid."Fond memories of her father coupled with an innate drive to service humanity result in Terri O'Neal becoming a highly dedicated, courageous and skillful fire fight... moreer. In the course of that effort and her development into young womanhood Terri is looked after by Frank Gunnison, owner and proprietor of the Short Cut Bar & Grill. While she knows him as "Uncle Frank" he plainly takes an interest in her more akin to that of a father, someone to stand by her after the tragic loss of her actual parent. To delve into and explain the intricacies of resolution of unanswered questions within the small town and speculation about Terri would be to reveal spoilers. Suffice it to say, however, that author Barber slowly and conscientiously drops story tidbits along the way, at the conclusion of which one learns, as does Terri, about the major figures of her life and how they came to play integral roles in it. It is a mysterious puzzle in which the reader moves piece by piece to ultimate realization and fulfilling resolution. One major cornerstone of "Taste of Fire" relates to Terri meeting a woman in an Atlanta suburb that she feels immediate identification toward and comes to view in the manner of a mother. The story's major mystery thread unravels in the face of Terri's gesture to supply a kidney transplant to the woman following an automobile accident.Frank Gunnison along with other townsfolk all start to wonder when Terri, upon reaching the thirty mark, will find an eligible male with whom to settle down and raise a family. Two major candidates emerge, the sincere and dedicated local doctor and a handsome, charismatic lawman. We see Terri weigh the options between two men who embrace different types. Charisma is weighed alongside stability, the quest for a good time in contrast with solid fulfillment. The plot of author Barber sets a solid demarcation point relating to quests for good and evil. This pursuit is related in the allegorical differences between the home spun genuineness and unflagging sincerity of Frank Gunnison and the shadowy, lurking presence of Orin Chambers. What provides the novel with intrigue is that the inevitable clash between two men embodying contrasting images of light and darkness need to be fully revealed in all major elements before Terri Neal can achieve closure in her search to unlock the nagging mystery surrounding her life. The image of Terri Neal follows in the notable tradition of women who shine on the cinema screen. The film industry took a substantial forward leap when heroines such as Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck portrayed women seeking to overcome gigantic odds to achieve meaningful purpose in life.Jeannie Faulkner Barber knows that a character of real purpose and ultimate achievement needs to overcome difficult odds, to fight her way through a thicket of obstacles, to secure fulfilling resolution at the end of the day. Hence Terri Neal is seen metaphorically dusting herself off and jumping back into life's fray after being knocked to the ground repeatedly by various obstacles. To jump up time and again and finally overcome negative experiences makes the effort along with the love she finds at the story's conclusion well worth the effort.
review 2: First I would like to commend Jeannie Faulkner Barber on dedication and gratitude to firefighters, police officers and workers everywhere. Her presence and Taste of Fire has helped bring attention to the people who risk their lives every single day. That being said, Jeannie has poured her heart into bringing Terry Neal to life, with great success. Taste of Fire is filled with excitement, mystery, and romance. I truly enjoyed the depths of the relationships and want to thank Jeannie for such a great read! less
