review 1: Public library copy.Another New 52 fail for me. This effort pales to Grant Morrison's work, the art work did not appear to be up to the standards of polished professionalism. Like the New 52 Swamp Thing, the concept seems to have borrowed from Green Lantern whereas colors have a meaning. Instead of a green ring's Will battling yellow ring construct's of Fear, we get green equals Team Plant/Swamp Thing versus Team Rot, the natural force of death and decay. I'd say this take on the character was more of a mix of superhero mixing with horror genre, and frankly, there was nothing wrong with the character pre-New 52.
review 2: So I learned in a very weird way that I am hugely drawn to "body horror." I have seen The Human Centipede way too many times; the scene with ... morethe dog in Invasion of the Bodysnatchers haunts me; and oh, Cronenberg. Give me all your David Cronenberg. It's not gore or guts that captivate me but desecration of the human form. Why is Slenderman so scary? Because he has no face. I casually flipped through this at the library and there was so much mutation that I ended up taking it home. Incredible artwork and a definitely interesting plot line - the worst part of this is definitely the dorky name. It's been a long time since I read old school comics and I miss it. Animal Man was a fun reintroduction. less
