review 1: Yes, Jeff Lemire is a brilliant writer, but coming into his series as an old school Animal Man fan was… traumatizing. Some dark, gritty reboots work, and this one does, but I wasn’t prepared for the level of horror and … grossness encapsulated within these pages.Lemire’s Animal Man was the first New 52 trade paperback I purchased, on the recommendation of the series by a friend on twitter. Though I did learn to enjoy the dark, nasty story, it’s just… Not Animal Man to me. A sentiment a lot of New 52 leaves me with.I’ve discussed with some of you how it sucks to be the person who can’t enjoy something because the nostalgia goggles are too thick, but damnit people. I liked Buddy Baker, and his damn family and I wish that they’d left him be. I think I’d li... moreke the story much better if it was a brand new character, and I’m horrified that they let this “Red vs Green vs Rot” storyline spread out into other titles. It was the one time I was glad that DC doesn’t give a shite about Vixen, cuz I don’t want this crap getting on her.If you like dark, horrific comics, and you don’t know a thing about Animal Man, I think you’ll really like this. But do me a favour and go back and read Morrison’s run afterwards. I give this one a conditional recommendation.
review 2: Lemire's Animal Man (along with Snyder's Swamp Thing and Mielville's Dial H) is essentially a Vertigo title masquerading as a part of the DC New 52. Personally, I have no problem with that, but unfamiliar readers, be wary: these titles look and feel quite different when compared to the more mainstream DC fare. I really like Lemire's work and he's still on his game here, but I'm a bit frustrated that even the first volume of Animal Man is plagued by the problem that has been eating away at the New 52 ever since its inception: the dreaded crossover. Yes, it is very cool that the stories of Animal Man and Swamp Thing are entwined and that reading both titles gives you a better appreciation for the world they create. But did we really have to delve into the crossover so soon? Granted, the first volume of Animal Man only has passing references to the events of Swamp Thing's first volume (and vice versa), but I would have loved for the comic to stand on its own feet (or paws) before trying to connect with a different (albeit complementary) title. With all of that said, if you have an interest in the character and you don't mind also picking up the first volume of Snyder's Swamp Thing, this is a good read and promises some cool ideas for the future. less

A very compelling, fast-paced story, with some truly nightmarish art. More, please!
