review 1: There are some well-used themes I'm a sucker for and one of them is ghosts, not the ghosts that trip down stairs to find themselves perpetually shacked up in some run-down death trap, taking selfies in foggy mirrors and whispering sweet nothings to new home owners, but the ghosts that characters own and hold tightly to themselves until the characters curl infinitely inward and can no longer identify lines of separation. These are the ghosts that don't stay wisely compartmentalized, to be visited in dreams and stories only. The characters meticulously nourish them, or the haphazardness of an accumulation of days/weeks/months/years nourishes them and the phantoms grow, like Stay Puft Marshmallow Men, and proliferate. Their haunt becomes so familiar that it overlays things an... mored people that don't deserve the association, let alone the classification. Characters wind each other into such ghost stories until those around them lose shape and separation as well. Jack has and becomes one such ghost. His is a spook story and a will-o'-the-wisp story. Shrug your shoulders with that or read in it any ghosts you know.
review 2: Devastatingly good. My respect for Jeff Lemire continues to grow. This book examines a complicated relationship between a man and his late father. Some of the stuff contained within that relationship will hit home with every reader without a doubt.Lemire's Essex County was an outstanding achievement, the Underwater Welder proves that it was no fluke, Mr. Lemire is the top writer IMO in the graphic format today. Five Stars! less
