review 1: While this didn't change my writing life, it had a lot of very useful ways of looking at the concept and practices of producing speculative fiction - and unlike a lot of writing books, it didn't claim to have all the answers, but to try and provide some examples of tools that you might try out in finding methods that worked for you on this project. The emphasis on creativity and wonder sometimes got a little trying in a tie-dye-and-love-beads sort of way, but there are some good points at the heart of it.
review 2: An amazing guide to creative writing. It has an emphasis on writing fantasy or sci fi, since that's what the author Jeff VanderMeer writes, but the advice in it could apply to any sort of fiction writing, as well as non-fiction narrative. This is,
... morebar none, one of the most creative approaches to the subject I've read, and I've read a lot of them. In addition to good advice on inspiration and the creative life, the elements of a story, beginnings and endings, narrative design, characterization, world-building, and the nuts and bolts of revision, this book is filled with fantastic, squiggly, visually rich, sometimes disturbing, but always imagination-prodding illustrations, and contains wonderful short pieces by well-known authors such as GRR Martin, Neil Gaiman, and Ursula K. LeGuin. There are quirky little cartoon characters that show up in odd places to add humor and insight; there are writing exercises, and little bits of advice scrolled up the sides so one has to tilt the book to read them. I can tell this is something I'll go back to again and again. I totally and enthusiastically recommend this for anyone trying to create a story. Truly a Wonderbook resource. less

The illustrations made this a fun, little writing book. Came just at the right time for me too.
