review 1: I was hesitant about reading this book because I prefer to read religious non fiction from authors who have a theology degree of some sort to support their research. Although I feel that God can use anyone, young or old, to minister toward others I wasn’t so sure I would find Bethke to be a reliable source given his background in the subject.Boy was I wrong. Although I don’t agree 100% with the message of this book I do agree with its primary theme that the idea of having a religion has become more of trend than actually living with one. I notice that many of the issues with today’s Christianity is because of the church itself. I agree with Bethke’s observation that many people go through the motions of being a Christian but have never had an actual conversation wi... moreth God.Bethke’s passion for Christ bleeds through the pages and is inspiring. I appreciate his use of pulling examples from the Bible to support his claims because it was oblivious how he did his research thoroughly. I enjoyed the flow of this book and how most of the chapters complimented each other in theme. I especially enjoyed how honest Bethke is about bringing up the fake Christians and that instead of judging each other we should try to encourage each other’s through Christ’s love.Yet a few of his stories didn’t quite connect with the book, such as his relationship advice. Bethke was recently married during the time of this book’s publication and I felt that of all the advice he was going to give this shouldn’t be one of them. I felt this advice was a little inappropriate coming from a newlywed with no marriage counseling experience who admits that the sin he struggles with the most is lust. If he had just left those details out this book would definitely be one of the best books I’ve read all year. This book did something for me that many devotional and religious books have yet to inspire me to do; read the Bible. Many religious books written by ministers have made me feel that I needed to try harder, give more, pray more but none ever inspired me to dig out my Bible and look myself. I’m not sure if this was because I wanted to fact check what Bethke was quoting or if I merely was desperate to find the same inspiration and answers that he found. Either way, he gets full points for getting me to do what many books have failed at getting me to do and I wish to thank him for that.I would recommend this book to anyone regardless of their religion because the one thing Bethke does well in this book is getting his readers to think for themselves. The discussions at the end of the chapters really help with this as well. Whether you agree with Bethke or not is entirely up to you but his ideas are worth questioning and his honesty is refreshing.
review 2: Warning: This may make some readers angry.I read the first chapter of this book and was stunned. I was immediately blown away by the beauty of this man's words. He's so honest and blunt about his past to guide and prove a point to his readers. I can only imagine the amount of courage it took to write such a book. There were so many things that made me stop and think. It took me so long to read this book because after I'd read a few paragraphs, I'd have to put it down and think about its message. This is a book you can read again and again and again; yet walk away every time and understand something new that you hadn't noticed the last time. I know this won't be the only time I read this book.Jefferson made me think about and realize things I never thought or realized before! It was like opening my eyes after a long sleep. Chapter 9 (section: "What we were created as and created for") made me see what I hadn't seen before. Every chapter was eye-opening and interesting and personal and heartfelt. The whole book was inspirational.Chapter 8 probably had the biggest impact on me because I've been having a difficult time lately. The whole book really helped me on a personal level, but as far as faith goes, Chapter 8 probably had the biggest effect on me. There are certain things I will be seeing with new eyes.I'm not entirely sure how to rate this book because it was just....It was indescribable, and this book will be different to everyone that reads it because I think everyone will get something different out of reading it. But personally, it made me see things on a whole new level and think about things in a different way. I would really recommend picking up this book, or even watching a few of Jefferson Bethke's YouTube videos. less

Wow, remember when Jefferson Bethke's video went viral on Youtube? Seriously, this guy is the real deal. I love everything that he stands up for and I genuinely respect him for standing up to the whole God-is-Santa-Clause & branding-Jesus-beyond-recognition mumbojumbo. Bethke breaks down the walls around Christianity that people themselves have put up and pushes us to see God - not religion.I love Bethke and I hope everyone get's a chance see his video and to read this book.

This book was really good. It was given to me by a good friend, and I'm glad that he did because I'm not sure that I would have read it otherwise. I feel like this book should be read by just about everyone. I love what the author has to say. And how it all comes out in writing is brilliant. Just like your sitting down having a chat with a normal guy. At least that's how it read to me. You should read this book.
