review 1: Farcical nonsensical ridiculousness. Ad nauseam maximus. Took me forever to get into this book and be even just a little invested in it, and then he went team too much over the top. Overall, this is a terrible book as a whole, and a poor representation of Deaver, who actually IS an amazing author with good stories to tell, a fact that is completely lost in this book. Not his best work could be the understatement of the year.
review 2: Deaver started out some years ago with these little paperbacks. I read him and learned. So now when I read a book of his----and I am a few behind, but they are on the shelf---when I read him, I keep a hammer handy. After I read what appears to be the last page, I beat the book to death with the hammer, because it has alrea
... moredy ended two or three or four times only to arise again. The man is a twisty, tricky, picky, snarly writer. But I never recall catching him in a lie or a cheat. Most of his work I have read closely and caught his tricks and foresaw where he was going. Foresaw, not guessed. He plays fair and if you want to read closely and pay attention, his sneaky camouflaged clues are all there for the grasping. This time around I have been bit distracted. Some of the twists I automatically caught because that is, after all, what I as a reader do. But he slipped a few by me, and the pleasure of the book is undiminished when that happens. It is like one of the wild amusement park rides where you are going headlong into a crash, only to snap sideways at the last microsecond. Thrilling.Deaver does what he does and is perhaps the best presently working. If he were a slightly better stylist he'd rate a big 5 Stars. As it is, I have to settle for Four, but they are four strong ones.Recommended. less

A very convoluted tale. Just when you think you know the ending there's a twist... And then another.
