review 1: This is one of those books which makes me wish I could give half stars, in which case it would be two and a half. Since I can't, it gets rounded down to two. It was an OK story, which kept my interest, but it's far more of a stand-alone book rather than part of a series. The connection with the rest of the Elm Creek stories is tenuous at best, with a very brief cameo appearance by Elizabeth Bergstrom Nelson that seems to be more of a plot point to move story along. And aside from an occasional mention of the quilts made by the main character's late mother and a scene in the second half in which one of her daughters has a tantrum over her inability to instantly produce a quilt for her, it has precious little to do with quilting. In fact, it seems that the greater focus... more of the story is the making of wine, rather than the making of quilts.
review 2: This was my second book of this series and probably my last. Most of the book was set in the Sonoma Valley during the time of prohibition. It brought out the strong negative impact prohibition had on those whose success and livelihood depended on growing grapes and making wine. To me the characters weren't very genuine. There were "good" characters and "bad" characters. It appeared that whether an action was justifiable or villainous depended on where they fit in those two categories. less
