review 1: I chose this book from the library shelf for no other reason than the word "aloha" in the title; I like to read books about or set in Hawaii. I had not read any of the other books in this series and now, having read this one, I probably won't. The main character, Bonnie, I found to be wimpy, judgmental and rigid. The story seemed clumsily designed to provide a vehicle for conveying information about Hawaii's history and (of course) quilting. And I just couldn't see what Bonnie's friends saw in her. Talk about a lack of empathy and compassion for others, lack of self-awareness, and knee-jerk emotional reactions... It's an easy vacation read, but not much more.

I have read all of the Elm Creeks books, and I loved that this book returned to the original characters and quilting. The book follows Bonnie, as she moves to Hawaii temporarily to help her old college friend start a quilt camp based on Elm Creek. If you'd enjoyed Bonnie in the previous books, you will enjoy this book. To me, the characters lacked depth, and I just didn't enjoy the story which reflected on Bonnie's unhappy marriage, and her interaction with her soon to be ex-husband during her divorce. The history of Hawaii was interesting. The book is a quick easy read.

I liked this book particularly for its glimpse into Hawaiian history. The descriptive scenes were very well done as I thought I could envision the Crater that the main characters visited at the end of the book and I can fully understand why this place would evoke deep contemplation. A perfect spot to soothe a troubled soul! I did think that the last part of the book was a bit over the top and I began to lose interest in Bonnie's plight. It ended well and with possibilities for a follow up!
