review 1: I loved the first book in this series. This one was rather disappointing... a lot...The writing is still smooth with a lot of drama and angst (liked that in book one).Unfortunately in 'A Touch of Scandal' the author worked through my whole no-no-list for historical romances:- protagonists definitely not weighted down with too much intelligence [check]- fickle hero isn't capable to keep his pants on [check]- heroine is a doormat [check]- storyline and characterization with more holes than a swiss cheese [check]
review 2: With his divorce freshly finalized, Garrett intends to hunt down and kill the man who tried to destroy his life. He didn't count on running into Kate, a flirtatious and naive servant girl who gets his pulse racing in a way only one other woman h
... moreas ever managed. But when he finds out Kate is the sister of the man he's looking for, Garrett is certain she's been using him, seducing him to allow her brother a chance to get the jump on him.For her part, Kate is instantly drawn to the muscular and mysterious Garrett, although she knows her overtures with him are entirely improper. When she discovers he and her brother are set against each other, she's torn between the two; her head tells her she should be loyal to her family before this man she barely knows, but her heart whispers something altogether different. The setup will be well known to anyone who read Haymore's previous book, as the circumstances of Garrett's divorce pretty much was the story. He's fairly typical as romance heroes go: a dark, handsome man of title who's been hurt in the past and needs some lovin' to cure what ails him. Kate stands out at least a little more from her fictional contemporaries. She's eager to rid herself of that pesky innocence as long as Garrett is around, not afraid to ask for what she wants regardless of societal taboos, and loyal almost to a fault. As empowered as this all sounds, though, she's the beautiful and educated woman who just needs someone to rescue her from her wrongful servitude. To be fair, Haymore's writing renders the characters likeable and keeps them from feeling like cardboard stock, especially with the lively dialogue. The biggest issue I had was how quickly Garrett and Kate were willing to throw away everything for love. They meet twice over two days and it's enough to get them to overlook the logic of the situation because they're sure "s/he's just not that kind of person." A longer acquaintance between them might have created some plot difficulties, but the instantaneous "but I really know him better than to think that" made me sigh.I sound like I've been picking at this, but I did enjoy the read while it was in my hands. There were a few fridge logic moments, but as a whole the story was fun and enjoyable, and the writing was solid enough to make me think I may have to look up more of Haymore's work. less
