review 1: I have read jeph Loeb's previous works like Batman The Long Halloween, Spider-Man Blue, Superman/Batman Public Enemies, Batman Hush, etc. I loved his storytelling in those preivous works. However, in this Marvel Ultimate Universe timeline post-Ultimatum "relaunch" in New Ultimates: Thor Reborn, I will say I am underwhelmed on his rather pedestrian storytelling. A writer could have written the same story in less than half the amount of pages. The story fell flat throughout many areas in the book, and the story did not push forward. The ending was rather abrupt and forced. The reader can see way in advance how Thor was coming back, with the death of someone he holds dear.Jeph Loeb did not seem to put much effort in this work as far as I am concerned. He basically wrote that ... morethe New Ultimates will have some extended talking heads, and then have an all out battle and drag that battle for half the book. Why? So that the uber-talented Frank Cho can provide a great visual art display in this book. I have rated the story 3 stars, but if I can separately rate the art in this book I would definitely give it 5 stars. Frank draws beautiful women. One need only look at the faces of the women in the book, and you will be reminded of Frank Cho's work on Liberty Meadows. The beautiful faces that he draws can hold your attention, and make you ask, how does Frank do it? How does he continually draw the most beautiful faces in the world of sequential art. There are several splash pages regarding the battle in Central Park between the ultimates and Loki's forces. The best visual being the one with the enormous dragon. The detail that Frank Cho puts in this creature and the action sequences with this creature just shows you how much fun Frank had while doing these art duties. He made the dragon alive and menacing. I will always purchase a book based on the art of Frank Cho. The man can draw women, monsters, and a great battle.I am not giving up on Jeph Loeb. I am willing to give his future work another chance. But I will be more careful prior to buying it.
review 2: Frank Cho on an Avengers book is a great idea, but I wish Jeph Loeb had a better story to tell. There's a lot of eye candy with double-page spreads because Cho is known best for drawing curvy women and dinosaurs well. But I could do away with Loeb's usage of character inner-thought text captions all together as locale captions and dialogue are enough to propel a story for me. The technique worked fine during his first Batman/Superman story (six issue) arc, but less so here. I'll try to be as direct and sensitive about this as I can, but it appeared Loeb didn't get enough of writing about his son's real life battle with cancer out of his system (as seen in Superman/Batman) that he had to incorporate it into a Marvel story.I'm no Ultimate universe expert, but having read Hickman's excellent Ultimate Thor book prior to this one: why does Thor have his traditional Mjolnir hammer and not the one he's been sporting all along from the beginning? Some other questions you'll not find the answer to: Why is Captain America hitting a woman and acting out of character? Why would a strong female character be attracted to Tony Stark, loathe him, and still sleep with him? Why are most of the male characters portrayed as jerks and the women portrayed only as receptacles for their love making? less

I don't think Jeff Loeb does a good 'edgy' storyline a la Mark Millar. Nice art.
aaaaa
Loeb wrote this? Did somebody put a gun to his head? Reads like it.

It's a bit if a crime to have a Thor comic be so uninteresting.

Meh. Not great, not awful. It merely functions.
