review 1: This is another of the Black Eyed Susan chapter books for the coming year and I really enjoyed it. It's 1963 in Lynchburg, VA and school integration has arrived. Kizzy Ann will be leaving her one room black school to attend the local elementary school. Her new teacher is welcoming (she is new to the school as well, apparently many teachers left rather than teach black students) but most others are not. Her older brother in high school is not welcomed at all and as a good football player he is not even given a chance to play on the Varsity team. An interesting and main part of the story is Kizzy Ann's relationship with her border collie Shag. I grew up in this time period but I am white so I can't speak to Kizzy Ann's experiences but I do have a black friend who was i... moren the first group of black students who went to a previously all white school in our MD county and she said at recess the only one who would talk to her was her cousin so Kizzy Ann's first year at this school seem realistic. I look forward to sharing this book with my students.
review 2: KIzzy Ann Stamps has a good story line, and is written as letters from Kizzy to her new teacher at the white school. I thoroughly enjoyed her adventures with her dog and finding new friends. However, the voice in this book is all wrong. Her letters did not sound like a child, much less a child of that time and setting. That made it very difficulty to finish the book, although the ending was satisfying. Good intentions, not so good delivery. less
