review 1: I abandoned it. It may be that if I had persevered I would have ended up loving it, but I just couldn't be bothered. I love experimental writing and interesting narrative structures, however, I like them when they complement the story and the characters, not for their own sake. When a book is very self-conscious, when it's shouting look at me! I am so clever! without actually making me feel anything, it just gets on my nerves.
review 2: This book starts off with a subtle, but sharp, sense of the strange. Before you know it you're on a journey of unfinished dream-like sequences that leave you wanting more and more. I could not put this book down. Mr. Ball takes you to the paramount of Strange and along the way he drops the occasional poetic insight to life in
... more the real world. The last 1/4 of the book left me wanting more. I felt it plateaued in the last 30 pages and the ending was charming and lovely...but not a satisfying end to the journey we'd just been on. less
