review 1: I needed some time to process my feelings about this book. I've concluded that I enjoyed it very much and need to discover the rest of the author's work. The story begins familiarly, meeting our characters in their dystopian setting, but it quickly turns in unexpected directions, propelled forward by an unexpected writing style. Initially, I was uncertain about the sparseness of the writing, but upon reflection found that the images I had painted in my head were striking and vivid. It seems to me Jesse Ball is masterful at his art. I was nearly disappointed at the ending, though really it is entirely fitting, and the speed with which I flipped to it speaks volumes about how much I was captured by the story. An unexpectedly beautiful and economically rich little novel. I re... morecommend it to anyone seeking something a bit different. It is worth pushing through any discomfort with the style.
review 2: The story of a father and his young daughter after a police state has taken over. Music is forbidden and the citizens must stay indoors during after dark. One night, the father leaves his child with the neighbors while he goes out after curfew in search of information regarding who killed his wife. Lots of funny and poignant endings, that I liked. Unfortunately, and I may just be an old curmudgeon, but I am sick of ambiguity in the name of art. less
