review 1: Read, but didn't finish. I wanted to like this book. I picked it up because the paper has a wonderful feel to it, and the woodcut illustration on the cover is intriguing. There are parts of it that I enjoyed. At its best, the book reads like sections of Italio Calvino's Italian Folktales, the author obviously tried to achieve that lapidary quality that make those stories so compelling and universal. As to the story itself, if Chuck Palahniuk sat down with Neal Stephenson to write a prequel to his Baroque Cycle this might be what they would come up with. The Grossbarts are brutish, hyper violent, and possess that same transgressive qualities that some of Palahniuk's characters have. But after a while it just becomes tedious.

... morerimm Fairy Tale in the darkest sense. If you are after an enjoyable 'historical fairy tale', this is it. Parts of the story are repulsive in the actions of the Brothers Grossbart, but you come to love their murderous and comical personality. I can't right much more without giving any of the story away, but I will sum up that the book is easy to read, dark, violent, philosophical, and in some parts so funny that I literally laughed out loud while reading...which is a very rare thing for me. Can't wait to start reading Bullington's other stories. less

Peaks early, but always entertaining. I would read another book by Bullington, but not right away.
