review 1: What first drew me to this book was the cover, and I'm glad I read it. It has a very Science Fiction/Fantasy feel to it, so if that is not you thing you might not want to read it.There are three distinct classes of people in this world:Elai - upper class (they have a soul)Pel - middle class (also have a soul)Chel - lower class (been told they do not have a soul)Then there are the vasai. The vasai have both male and female parts and their soul can touch other souls in order to heal that person. At the beginning of the book vasai are only allowed to heal the elai. They do this through sexual acts.Amaranth is a vasi and he has always questioned the way their society was structured. He believes he should be able to heal others, besides the elai, that have a soul.Ash is a ... morechel. At the start of the book he gets caught stealing from a pel and he was brutally beaten and raped. Amaranth finds Ash dying in the dump and he heals him. These two form a bond. The story was nothing like I expected it to be, but I was not disappointed.
review 2: ✰✰✰✰½ In Amaranth and Ash' world, each have proscribed roles that they are not supposed to step out and neither is happy. One night, Amaranth, a vasai feels a soul in pain calling to him and he finds a very injured Ash, a Chel. Chels have been held down by beliefs that they don't have souls so when Ash finds Ash, he realizes that once again, those in charged have lied. Amaranth as a vasai lives in better circumstances but it's still a gilded cage. Is he a healer or just a highly-paid prostitute? As Ash heals, their souls meld together and when they are torn apart, this starts a domino effect and turns everyone's world upside-down. This was a beautiful story and had interesting overtones to current times. less

A good story. The writing was a little dry; nothing made me "react".
