review 1: Not bad at all! I give this short story 3.5 stars, which I'll round up to four.The writing was pretty good. Just before reading this, I read another similar short story that was so well-written I couldn't even come up with an adjective to convey how...magically artistic it was. This one didn't reach quite that level of mastery, but Freely can hold her own, for sure. I did think that the voices of her characters' internal monologues were particular authentic and well-written.Funnily enough, it was the sex scene that turned me off the story more than anything else. Partly, I think, because I appreciate a slow burn on my romances, with lots of build-up and private longing and that sort of thing. It also involved some things that I'm not personally into (which is absolutely fi... morene, except that stuff like that isn't going to elicit the desired response from me). But then again, I'm sure if the author had written that scene to appeal to me, there'd be a bunch of other people complaining about it.Most important is that my interest in this world is definitely piqued - I'm keen to read something else set there...hopefully with a little more meat than a short story.Hmm. Maybe "meat" wasn't the best choice of words...
review 2: I was immediately pulled into this story. It wad very different compared to other M/M books I have read as this one had a Futuristic Science Fiction feel to it. I really enjoyed the concept as well, (that being gay was illegal) it was unique and captivating.I haven't yet had the pleasure of reading more of Jessica Freely's work but I definitely will, very soon! I would highly recommend this book to any fans of M/M romances. less
