review 1: This was well-written fluff if that's possible. It brings up a few interesting points concerning self-preservation and moral codes, but it's all wrapped up so perfectly (and with a few truly gratuitous sexual references) that it reads more like a teen thriller than adult fiction. Fun and fast to read, but lacking in literary maturity. I would be interested to read more by the same author in several years as I like the writing style in general.
review 2: This is an excellent first novel by the author. It's based on events which occurred in a small Hungarian village from just before World War I until several years after the armistice. This idyllic life comes crashing to a halt when the war ends, the Italians are shipped home, and the local men return. They of course beat and torment their wifes as before the war, but not for long. The women start poisonning their abusers. It's a quick and amusing read. less

Quick, interesting read. Serious subject but some how darkly humorous.
