review 1: More like 3 1/2 stars. It's based on the true story of a small village in Hungary where many of the women proceeded to kill their husbands after the end of World War I. And it went on for approximately 10 years before anyone outside the village noticed! The author's fictionalized account made me sympathize, at least initially, with the women. They lived in a time when there was little recourse for women in bad relationships. They had little or no resources. Nevertheless they became no better, and perhaps worse, than the men they deliberately and systematically murdered. Amazing story.
review 2: This is a world, a time, a set of circumstances, that allows once meek women to grow strong. Strength leads to self-assurance, which then leads to death, and more
... more death. Sari, a local midwife and medicine-woman in the early 19 th century is the woman at the center of this historical drama. She is a strange but strong character whose choices set in motion a town-wide "epidemic." An interesting portrait of time, place, and character. less
