review 1: Excellent book written in a dreamy quality. The story is from the perspective of Sarah a high school student. She has a very disfunctional family and as you read the story, you see the family spiraling downward. The story is set in the 1970's and the author has captured the feeling of the era. Her oldest brother, Peter is a long haired folk singer who smokes pot and runs off to CA after high school graduation leaving Sarah to deal with family issues. Mom and dad medicate with booze and Rx meds which aggravates things. Of the 2 younger brothers at home, one seems autistic and the other a happy go lucky innocent with a sensitive heart. Sarah's mom dies and things just get harder. She's coming of age without her mom and must make some tough decisions on her... more own.
review 2: Free Friday offering from Barnes &Noble. A gently told story of Sarah, a young woman who grows up and has to make the difficult choices that women must make. Jessica Keener's writing style creates beautiful images. "until our voices and Peter's guitar formed a nest high in the trees,..." "Crystal perfume bottles clustered on the shelf like miniature people whispering secrets."I love that these free books encourage reading outside of the best seller lists! Thank you B&N! less

This was a snapshot of a family in the 1970's. I enjoyed it but felt it ended abruptly.
