review 1: I enjoyed this book more then the first book. Probably because Lena Goodwood plays a major role in this book. Nobody does dryads as well as Jim Hines. His ability to come up with very unique, but believable takes on dryads is second to none. The dryad Hephra from his Princess series is one of my favorite characters of all time and I'm still waiting for a book/story of her adventures. :) There is a fair amount of growth/changes in Issac's character in this book. Some developments were predicable, and some were a surprise. I cannot wait for book three to see where Hines takes Issac's character after this book. Overall, I love where Hines is taking this story line.
review 2: A good follow-up to the first book. I liked where this was going and the introductio... moren of "new" "libriomancers" kept my attention. I have strong feelings about cultural appropriation and "the white man" stealing other cultures' traditions, etc. That Gutenberg may be involved in the plot doesn't help lessen my own feelings about that. Going back to the story, I love that Hines continues to use books as a defense. I didn't feel as much emotional pull been though each chapter is prefaced with Lena's story. I found my steam and interest waning around the middle. Hines likes to write. In the end, we still don't really know what's happened to the others. But honestly I'm not sure I'm that interested in reading the next book, if there is one. less
