review 1: I wouldn't want to say I don't much care for Nick Corey, but I wouldn't say I like him none neither. Why, I guess he just makes you not want to trust him and his sorry way of carrying out God's work, sheriffin' the good 1280 people of Pottsville. Well, I'd say he's got him a parti-clar way of story tellin', one that has you feeling he's not all he says he is. But, I guess you probably know better. Maybe then you can just put the book down and walk away. But I'm bettin' you can't.
review 2: This noir 217 pager of some age (1964)does stand the test of time. It's still sharp as a stick in the eye, and yet that eye holds the cold, flat snake coldness. These characters are facades over nasty. Our Sheriff of Pop. 1280 is clearly the antithesis of what he appears. I
... moret was absolutely 4 star level in the town's context and locale language. And you'll find that language loaded with non-PC racist and sexist slurs to maximum levels. To me, it lost an entire star in the women's roles. Sorry, sociopath characters all, it still defies belief that these women, knowing him as they did, could be as manipulated so easily. Especially to the finale event; just not going to happen, IMHO. But this is fiction, right!By the end, I didn't wonder if our Sheriff wasn't now in 2014 one of our 40 year tenant Aldermanic Bosses in Chicago. Probably the tallest one with the most hair and bigger belly, and not small and slender Mike. This novel being his young phase of internship to the politico in Louisiana before following the immense migration North up the Mississippi. I just couldn't round it up to a four because it was too mean spirited for me to enjoy it to a 4. The dialect writing was a 4. BTW, my soft covered book was OLD, yellowed pages and type that looked similar to a typewriter's with the base line "off". But it was in terrific shape for the materials it was composed of- not a curled or creased page, and few minor stains. Kudos to the library in Oak Park, IL that braced it and covered it well! I wonder often when those skills will cease altogether. less
